Obituary for Carol J. Stegeman

Carol J. Stegeman, 77, of Hartsburg, Missouri, passed away Monday, November 25, 2013, at St. Joseph's Bluffs in Jefferson City. She was born September 26, 1936, in Jefferson City, Missouri, the daughter of the late Lewis and Golda (Sappenfield) Moreau. She was a graduate of Jefferson City High School, where she was a Jayette in the Pep Club. She also attended Jefferson City Junior College. She was married to Leonard H. "Kraut" Stegeman, who preceded her in death. She then was united in marriage to Terry Sears, who also preceded her in death. Carol and her husband Leonard owned and operated Capitol Vending Service and Central Missouri Vending Service. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Jefferson City, the Ashland Garden Club, the Hartsburg Extension Club, and the Southern Boone PTA. She enjoyed flower arranging, gardening, and working in the yard. In her early years, she also enjoyed synchronized swimming, ice skating and water ballet. Most of all, she loved attending her grandchildren's activities. Carol is survived by three sons: Steve Stegeman (wife Susan) of Jefferson City, Christopher Stegeman (wife Brenda) of Jefferson City, and Michael Stegeman (wife Julie) of Jefferson City; and eight grandchildren: Scott, Seth, Brittany, Halie, Allison, Devon, Brock and Dylen Stegeman. She was also preceded in death by a brother: Don Moreau. Friends will be received from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Friday, November 29, 2013, at the Houser-Millard Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, November 29, 2013, at the Houser-Millard Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Riverview Cemetery. Richard J. Sporleder, 74, of Marshall, died Monday, November 25, 2013, at his home. Born April 19, 1939 in St. Cloud, Minn., he was the son of the late Howard W. (Bud) Sporleder and Margaret M. Jansky Sporleder. He was a graduate of St. Cloud Technical High School, Missouri Valley College in Marshall, and received his master's degree from Central Missouri State University. On October 20, 1962, he married Bernice Samson, who survives of the home. He worked as an auditor for MFA, an agent for the I.R.S., and was then a professor at St. Benedictine College in Atchison, Kan. and Moberly Area Community College in Moberly, and owned and operated Sporleder Tax Service. He was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, did volunteer work with prison ministries, served as a Republican Committeeman, and was a member of the Pachyderm Club and the Jaycees. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons: Dr. Patrick Sporleder and wife Michelle of Lohman, Dr. Chris Sporleder and wife Deanna of rural Marshall, and Andrew Sporleder, Esq. and wife Nicole of Wardsville; 11 grandchildren: Alexandria, Victoria, Krista, Erich, Stephen, Jeremy, Benjamin, Rachel, Rebekah, Emily, and Alison; one sister, Joy Baty of Springfield; two nieces and one nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter in infancy; one brother, Howard N. Sporleder; and one nephew, Timothy H. Sporleder. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 30, 2013 at St. Peter Catholic Church with Fr. Kevin Gormley and Fr. George Kramer officiating. Burial will be in Ridge Park Cemetery. Harold Wayne Hartman, 74, of Hartsburg, passed away Tuesday, November 26, 2013, at his home. Harold was born September 26, 1939, in Jefferson City, the son of Ray and Minnie Maze Hartman. He married Alice Vaughan on June 4, 1955, in Mexico, and she survives. He was a retired roofer, a member of the Hartsburg Lions Club, loved fishing, worked in the garden, and attended New Hope Baptist Church in Hartsburg. Survivors include: two sons, Dennis Hartman and his wife Cindy, and Karl Hartman and his wife Irene, one daughter, Debra Sankpill and her husband Chris, one daughter-in-law, Lorine Nelson, all of Hartsburg; one sister, Patricia Schenk and her husband James of Lebanon; 14 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Roy Wayne, and one sister, Margaret. Services will be held at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, November 30, 2013, at Robinson Funeral Home with visitation from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Joe Jackson-Parks, age 18, of Jefferson City, Missouri, and Champaign, Illinois, passed away Saturday, November 23, 2013, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Warrensburg, Missouri. He was born August 12, 1995, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, a son of Thurman Parks and Dionne Smith. He was a 2013 graduate of Central High School in Champaign, Illinois. He was currently a freshman at Lincoln University and was on the Lincoln Blue Tiger football team. Joe enjoyed playing football, wrestling, and performing in the shot-put during Track & Field events. Joe is survived by his father: Thurman Parks of Grand Rapids, Michigan; his mother: Dionne Smith of Indianapolis, Indiana; four brothers: Thurman Parks Jr., Dezmond Parks, Michael Miller, Eric Lewis; four sisters: Kristeena Smith-Jackson, Ronnieceya Smith, Ashley Parks, Jephri McGarity; paternal grandmother: Genivive Martin; maternal grandparents: Joe and Diane Jackson; and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins. Ronald David Shook, 75, of Jefferson City, died Tuesday, November 26, 2013, at St. Mary's Health Center. He was born May 31, 1938, in East St. Louis, Ill., the son of the late John and Eunice (Bridget) Shook. He was married to Theresia Irmgard Wiealoch on June 18, 1959. She survives at the home. Mr. Shook was a United States Army Veteran. He worked as a maintenance worker for the air conditioning and refrigeration industry. Other survivors include: four children, Ronald Shook, Jr.; Thomas Shook; Rebecca Shook Galman; Patrick Shook; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Beverly. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Eugene Shook; and two sisters, Ruth Wilcox and Susan Stover. Mr. James A. Russell Jr., age 95 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., died Saturday, November 30, 2013, at St. Mary's Health Center. James was born June 7, 1918, in Somerset, Kansas, the son of James A. Sr and Cloie P. Lay Russell. He was married on October 21, 1939, in Kansas City, Mo. to Eloise D. Jordan who preceded him in death on May 22, 2004. He graduated from Paola High School, Paola, Kansas. A resident of the Jefferson City area since 1980, James was employed with the Phillips Petroleum Pipeline Company from 1941 until his retirement as a supervisor in 1980. James was a 70 year member of the Masonic Lodge, A.F. & A.M. in Paola, Kansas. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite and the Moolah Temple in St. Louis, Mo. where he was a Captain with the Moolah Mounted Lancers. Survivors include: two daughters, Martha A. Hervey and her husband Tom of Columbia, Mo. and Sue Hurtado of Jefferson City, Mo.; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, four brothers, and one sister. Private graveside services and interment will be conducted at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Columbia, Mo. at a later time. Dale and Wilma Maxine (Musick) Sears-Rollins. Jeannette was a graduate of Jefferson City High School and obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Marketing from the University of Missouri. She enjoyed hand sewing, cross-stitch and embroidery and was talented at playing the piano. Jeannette is survived by her son: Steven Webster Barrows (Christy) of Grand Junction, Colorado; mother: Maxine Rollins; and two sisters: Judy Dalene Goodin, husband Butch and Joyce Wagner husband Ken. Janet Theresa Nichols, 73, of Holts Summit, Missouri, died Thursday, November 28, 2013, at the home of her daughter in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. She was born on November 4, 1940, in Osage County, the daughter of the late Lewis B. and Josephine R. Berhorst Klebba. She was married on December 14, 1968, in Jefferson City to William Jacob Nichols who preceded her in death on April 6, 1999. A 1958 graduate of Fatima High School in Westphalia, Mrs. Nichols retired in 2000 as Data Entry Supervisor with the Missouri Department of Social Services where she had been employed for 35 years. She had previously worked for Linn Manufacturing Company for one year; the Bermuda NCO Club for one year; and the Missouri Highway Department for two years. She was a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church; Ladies Sodality; VFW Ladies Auxiliary; American Legion Ladies Auxiliary; Holts Summit 50-Plus Club; Holts Summit Retirees Club; and the XYZ Club. Survivors include one daughter, Debbie (David) Hammon, Cape Girardeau, Missouri; one son, Rick Nichols, Holts Summit; one step-son, Jim (Terry) Nichols, Jefferson City; seven step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; two step-great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Eugene (Norma) Klebba, Linn, Missouri; and three sisters, Marie Morfeld, Linn, Missouri; Agnes Voss, Linn, Missouri; and Lillian (Ronald) Cassmeyer, Folk, Missouri. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Lewis F. Klebba and Harold Klebba; and two brothers-in-law, Stephen Morfeld and Wilbert Voss. Mrs. Matilda A. Bax, age 96 years, of Wardsville, Mo., died Friday, November 29, 2013, at the Jefferson City Manor Nursing Center. Matilda was born November 29, 1917, in Meta, Mo., the daughter of Ben and Elizabeth Scheulen Kroll. She was married on November 12, 1945, in Meta, Mo. to Al B. Bax who preceded her in death on December 11, 1995. A lifelong resident of the Meta and Wardsville area, Matilda was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. She was employed with St. Mary's Health Center in the Surgery Department for many years prior to her retirement in 1975. Everyone who knew Matilda enjoyed her home cooked meals. She loved to quilt, play cards, and spend time with her family. Survivors include: two sons, James Bax and his wife Eula of Amarillo, Texas and Charles Bax and his wife Lois of Jefferson City, Mo.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Al. Visitation will be at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 2, 2013. Larry Thomas (Tom) Wooldridge, age 72, of Springfield, passed away Wednesday, November 27, 2013, at Cox South Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Tom was born in Lockwood, Mo. Tom was a believer in Jesus Christ and at an early age he was received into the fellowship of First Baptist Church in Lockwood by baptism. He graduated from Lockwood High School and attended Draughn's Business College in Springfield. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served his country for two years. In 1966, he met the woman to be his bride. He and Judy Brinkman were married at First Baptist Church in Owensville on April 15, 1967. At that point in time, Tom worked for Jefferson Life Insurance in Springfield. In 1969, he began working for Ozark Gift House in Springfield and retired in 2005. He and his wife are members of Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Springfield. Tom will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife, Joan Wooldridge; three sons: Scott Wooldridge and wife Jill, Jeff Wooldridge, and Jay Wooldridge and his wife Laura, all of Springfield and areas surrounding Springfield; five grandchildren: Sydney, Kendall, Noah, Jacob, and Logan; one brother: Bill Wooldridge of Webb City; two sisters: Margaret Nutter and Jan Johnson, both of Springfield and the surrounding area. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Uly and Bertha Wooldridge; one brother, Frank Wooldridge; and nieces, Sherri Nutter and Emily Dobbs. Visitation will be held from 6:00-9:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 1, 2013 at Greenlawn Funeral Home South. Terry L. "Fluffy" Edgell, age 42 years, of Holts Summit, Mo., passed away Friday, November 29, 2013, at St. Mary's Health Center. Terry was born July 13, 1971, in Jefferson City, Mo., the son of James R. and Sharon Kay Cooley Edgell. He was married on October 19, 1991, in Russellville, Mo. to Tammy E. Adams. A lifelong resident of the Central Missouri area, Terry was a 1989 graduate of Jefferson City High School. He was employed as a mechanic with McKnight Tire Company until ill health forced his retirement. Terry was a member of the Outlaw Car Club in Jefferson City. During his free time, he enjoyed working on his S-10 pickup truck and watching WWE wrestling. Most importantly, he cherished time with his family, especially his granddaughter. Survivors include: his wife of 22 years, Tammy Edgell; one daughter, Rebecca Nicole Meyer and her husband Ryan of Holts Summit, Mo.; one granddaughter, Baleigh Marie Meyer, who he referred to as "his princess"; two brothers, Ralph "Buck" Edgell and his wife Jan of Taos, Mo. and James "Bubba" Edgell of Jefferson City, Mo.; one sister, Roxane Edgell of Jefferson City, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 3, 2013. Wayne Meyer Hilgedick, 82, of Hartsburg, passed away Saturday, November 30, 2013, at Boone Hospital in Columbia. Wayne was born September 22, 1934, in Hartsburg, the son of Otto and Hulda Meyer Hilgedick. He married Wanda Grace Scott on August 1, 1964, and she preceded him in death. Wayne was a farmer all of his life, a member of Peace United Church of Christ in Hartsburg and he was a founding member of the South County Bank in Ashland. He was also a past member of the Southern Boone Board of Eduction, Boone Electric Cooperative Board Member, River Hills Housing Board, Hartsburg Levy Board and Hartsburg American Legion. Survivors include, his two sons, Terry Scott Hilgedick, wife Kristie, Ricky Wayne Hilgedick, wife Donna; three grandsons, Ethan, Tyler and Oscar, all of Hartsburg; one brother, Donald Hilgedick of Fayette; one sister, Violet Bishop of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Virgil Hilgedick and two sisters, Helen Grantham and Mildred Wilson. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to American Cancer Society or to Peace United Church of Christ in care of the family. Paul Hugo Graessle, 88, of Wardsville, died Monday, December 2, 2013, at Capital Region Medical Center in Jefferson City. He was born on June 25, 1925, in Jefferson City, the son of the late Louis Hugo and Lydia Stockman Graessle. He was married on December 2, 1950, in Jefferson City to Joan Loretta Rothove who survives at the home. A U.S. Navy veteran of both World War II and the Korean Conflict, Mr. Graessle received a Bachelor of Science in Accounting degree from Lincoln University in 1988. He owned and operated Graessle's Conoco Quick-Stop in Wardsville for many years. After retirement he was employed as an accountant with H&R Block Company. He was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Wardsville; the Wardsville Lions Club; and coordinated Duplicate Bridge Clubs in Jefferson City and Columbia for many years. Other survivors include four children, Steve Graessle, Kansas City, Mo.; Lisa Graessle, Wardsville, Mo.; Luke (Melodi) Graessle, Rocky Mount, Mo.; and Julie (Jim) Floyd, Florissant, Mo.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Don Graessle, Kansas City, Mo.; Jack (Mary) Graessle, Eldon, Mo.; and Tom (Agnes) Graessle, Taos, Mo.; and two sisters, Mary (Urban) Brandt, Jefferson City; and Helen Odendahl, St. Louis. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Carl Graessle and Phil Graessle; and two sisters, Virginia Carol and Ann Falter. Vilarah Mildred Steinman, 86, of Jefferson City, Missouri, was called home by her Lord and Savior on Sunday, December 1, 2013, at Jefferson City Manor Care Center. She was born on August 19, 1927, in Cicero, Illinois, the daughter of the late William Catlett and Clara Bell Michaud LeHew. She was married on January 31, 1946, at St. Peter Catholic Church in Jefferson City to Leonard Joseph Steinman, her soul mate and love of her life, who survives at the home. She was a 1945 graduate of Schurze High School near Chicago, and also had attended St. Peter Catholic School and Jefferson City High School. A homemaker, Mrs. Steinman was a member of the American Legion Unit 0005 Auxiliary; and Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary Unit 17. She loved to travel, bowl, crochet, and spend time with loved ones and friends. She is a direct descendent of Sir Peter LeHew, founder of LeHew Town (now called Front Royale, Virginia) and Brigadier General Rufus R. Putnam who was Surveyor General under President George Washington. Survivors include two sons, Francis W. "Frank" Steinman, Maui, Hawaii; and Leonard J. (Velma) Steinman II, of Jefferson City; one daughter, Vilarah Le Steinman (partner, Anita Robinson), of Jefferson City; two grandsons, Michael R. Steinman, Norwalk, Connecticut; and Leonard J. Steinman III, North Las Vegas, Nevada; and numerous nephews, nieces, great-nephews, and great-nieces. She was preceded in death by her beloved sister, Clara B. LeHew Palmer. Edward Russell (Coach) Hodges, age 92, of Eldon, passed away Tuesday, November 26, 2013. Coach was born on Saint Patrick's Day 1921 to Mark and Lois (VanSickle) Hodges in Jefferson City. Growing up in Jefferson City and St. Louis, Ed played football for and graduated from McKinley High School in St Louis. He then attended Washington University, transferring to the University of Missouri to play football for the Tigers under the coaching of Don Faurot. Ed played tackle in the 1941 Sugar Bowl. The 1941 Tiger football team was inducted into the University of Missouri Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame in 2008. Ed was awarded 2nd Team All American 1942. After war broke out, he volunteered for service in the United States Navy. While in training, he played football for the Navy Seahawks. He married his childhood sweetheart, Roberta (Bobbie) Taake, in 1944. Ed served in the Pacific during World War II. After discharge, Ed returned to the University of Missouri to complete his bachelor's degree and then begin his coaching career. Ed coached at Moberly, Joplin Junior College, Hannibal and Eldon. During his tenure in Eldon, Ed coached girls volleyball, high school and junior high football, and was the assistant basketball and track coach. Coach was the boy's physical education teacher and was affectionately referred to as 'Physical Ed' by his high school students. Ed loved fishing, a skill he learned from his father and grandfather and passed on to his sons. It was a skill Bobbie came to embrace. Bobbie attained membership in the Lunker Club at Bennett Springs, a feat Ed never attained, although he never gave up trying! Coach leaves a legacy through the things he loved - family, friends, football and fishing. Ed and Bobbie have three children, Bill (wife Carol), Julie (husband Mike), and Mark (wife Jan); four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Ed was preceded in death by his loving wife Bobbie and his parents. He leaves behind a family who is saddened at his passing but grateful for having a man of great character for a father. A celebration of life will be held December 12 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon. In lieu of flowers, a gift to the Eldon R-1 School Football program in Ed's name, Eldon High School, 101 South Pine, Eldon, MO 65026, or a donation to Preferred Hospice, 1900 N. Shirley Louise Phillips, 70, of Jefferson City, passed away Tuesday, December 3, 2013 at her residence surrounded by her family. She was born on August 23, 1943, in Wilson, Arkansas, a daughter of the late Ervin and Vera Louise Carr. She was united in marriage on April 7, 1972, in Union City, Tennessee, to Marvin Phillips, who survives at the home. Shirley was a daycare provider out of her home for many years and previously worked at Montgomery Wards, K-Mart, and Memorial Hospital. She attended the First Assembly of God Church. Shirley enjoyed shopping, going to yard sales and spending time with her family. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children: Dennis "Glen" Malone and wife Connie of Jefferson City and Betty Sue Hein and her husband Howard of Bunceton; her five grandchildren: Regina Daniels, Dwain Brown, Cody Malone, Mary Kemna, and Colton Malone; one great-granddaughter: Alana Gauthier; one brother: Carl Carr Jr. of Dyersburg, Tennessee; and two sisters: Helen Ann Beary of Powhatan, Arkansas and Betty Sue Woodall of Caruthersville. She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers: William Andrew Carr and Buster Lee Carr. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Mary Ann Bond, 81, of Jefferson City, passed away Monday, December 2, 2013, in the comfort of her home surrounded by her family. She was born December 14, 1931, in Henley, Missouri, the daughter of the late Charles G. and Hilda Marie (Kempker) Doerhoff. On September 16, 1950, she was united in marriage in Mary's Home to Clifford R. Bond, who preceded her in death on December 19, 2003. Mary Ann attended Eugene High School and was a 1970 graduate of Lincoln University where she received a degree in education. She was a teacher at Immaculate Conception Catholic School for 19 years. Mary Ann was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella and DAV. She was also a member of St. Mary's Health Center Auxiliary, where she was past president, board member and served on numerous committees. Mary Ann enjoyed volunteering at St. Mary's, but most of all she loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by three daughters: Nancy Wadley (Steve), Debbie Chick (Doug) and Jan Rinehart (Darin), all of Jefferson City, one sister: Betty Schulte (Pat) of Jefferson City; sister-in-law: Delores Hart of Jefferson City; seven grandchildren: Amy Mason Lee (Brad), Jacob Wadley, Kristen Chick, Sarah Chick Mock (Kevin), Melissa Chick, Tracy Rinehart, Brent Rinehart; six great-grandchildren: Eli Mason, Emerson Mason, Kira Rinehart, Kyla Rinehart, Landon Mock and Lily Mock; and two step-great-grandchildren: Hayden Lee and Hudson Lee. Allen Wilkinson, 58, of Jefferson City, passed away Tuesday, December 3, 2013, at University of Missouri Hospital and Clinics. He was born September 4, 1955 in St. Charles, Missouri the son of the late Leroy Alvin and Starla (Shockley) Wilkinson. On January 21, 1978, he was united in marriage to Barbara Harris, who survives at the home. Allen served in the United States Army from 1972-1992 where he retired. He was then employed with Missouri Consolidated Health Care from 1996-2012. He also volunteered as a Reserve Deputy for the Cole County Sherriff's Department. Allen was a member of the N.R.A and the American Legion Post 5. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Along with his wife Barbara, he is survived by two children: Tosh Wilkinson of Henley and Missy Simpson (Kyle) of Holts Summit; one brother: Tim Wilkinson (Viola) of Marble Hill, Missouri, three sisters: Shiela, Elaine and Sonya; four grandchildren: Aleasha James, Logen Petty, Keagun Wilkinson and Jax Simpson. He was preceded in death with two brothers and one sister. Michael Ray Long, 61, of Jefferson City, passed away Monday, December 2, 2013, near Chicago, Illinois. He was born December 10, 1951, in Jefferson City, a son of Marvin R. and Luella F. (Hildebrand) Long. He was a 1970 graduate of Southern Boone County R-I in Ashland, Missouri, and went on to graduate in 1972 from Linn Technical College in Linn, Missouri. On September 11, 1970, Michael was united in marriage in Columbia, Missouri, to Dianne Koenig, who survives at their home. Michael was a Millwright at Westinghouse in the Nuclear Division, where he had worked since 1988. He previously worked for Westinghouse (ABB) from 1972-1978, and with the Carpenters Union from 1978-1988. He attended St. Peter Catholic Church and was a member of the Carpenters Union. He enjoyed fishing, taking care of the backyard pool, taking naps with his dog Jack, and just being around his family. Along with his wife of 43 years, Michael is also survived by six children: Dawn Nelson (husband Christopher) of Jefferson City, Mo., Jason Long (wife Lila) of Jefferson City, Mo., Rachael Long of St. Louis, Mo., Ashley Koerber (husband Bryce) of Jefferson City, Mo., Sarah Long of Warrensburg, Mo., and Megan Long of Springfield, Mo.; his mother: Luella Long of Jefferson City, Mo.; one brother: Marvin "Eugene" Long of the state of California; six sisters: Constance Carrier of Lakeland, Fla., D'Ann Wilson of Reeds, Mo., Stephanie Miller of Columbia, Mo., Doris Tatum of Carthage, Mo., Andrea Hoover of Jefferson City, Mo., and Mary Jo Long of Rolla, Mo.; four grandchildren and one on the way: Alexandra and Skylar Nelson, Ruby and Jaxen Long, and Baby Koerber. He was preceded in death by his father: Marvin R. Long; and a sister: Jeanette Rice.
