Larry Charles Rackers, 68, of Jefferson City, passed away Thursday, February 7, 2013, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis after a hard-fought battle with cancer. He was born November 30, 1944, in Jefferson City, the oldest son of the late Lawrence H. and Lottie Marie (Branch) Rackers. Larry was a 1963 graduate of Helias High School. He received his Bachelor of Science degree and his Master's degree in Business Administration from Lincoln University, graduating Cum Laude in 1980. Larry proudly served in the United States Army beginning in 1968 during the Vietnam War, where he was a computer operator for two years. Larry was employed with the Missouri Department of Social Services, Division of Welfare, where he was a programmer and systems analyst for 40 years. The Missouri Governor honored Larry for his success in leading and completing both the WIC and Y2K IT projects. Larry was an avid gardener and he enjoyed taking his produce from his garden and sharing it with his mother's friends at Hyder Apartments. He also enjoyed fishing, playing golf, hunting, and horseback riding. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family, especially his four grandchildren. He is survived by two daughters: Jeanna Rackers of Wardsville and Erika Slicker (husband Brad) of Jefferson City; four siblings: Stan Rackers of Jefferson City, Gnell Bruemmer (husband Earl) of Wardsville, Debra Scott of Overland Park, Kansas, and Mark Rackers (wife Cindy) of Wardsville; four grandchildren: Shelby Rackers, Dylan Rackers, Addison Slicker and Joseph Slicker; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. William "Bill" Korsmeyer, 71, of Holts Summit, passed away February 8, 2013, at the Salem Memorial District Hospital in Salem, Missouri. He was born February 1, 1942, in Callaway County, the son of the late Raymond J. and Mildred (Fowler) Korsmeyer. Bill was a 1960 graduate of Jefferson City High School. He served in the United States Army and the United States Army Reserves. Bill was employed with the Missouri Department of Conservation as a Biologist Assistant and was a lifelong farmer. Bill was a member of the Shiloh United Methodist Church in Holts Summit, Lodge #565 AF&FM of Tebbetts, Odd Fellows Lodge of Tebbetts and the Cedar City Lions Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping. Bill was a great protector of nature and the outdoors. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals Fan and loved watching birds. Kenneth "Wayne" Bennette, 72, of California, Mo., passed away on Saturday, February 9, 2013, at the Capital Region Medical Center in Jefferson City, Mo. He was born on March 3, 1940 in Higginsville, Mo., the son of Benjamin Dean Bennette and Bessie Nathalia Embree Bennette who preceded him in death. He graduated from Jefferson City High School in 1959. He was united in marriage on November 11, 1969 at Main Street Baptist Church to Sharon Kay Inman whom survives of the home. Kenneth ìWayneî was an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Navy, an orderly at Memorial Hospital, and a retired corrections officer for Missouri Department of Corrections. He was a member of Main Street Baptist Church. He coached baseball teams in Jefferson City and California, he liked to bowl and loved to dance even in his wheelchair. He is survived by a special nephew who is considered a son, Jeffrey Shane; one sister, Donna (Bennette) Kittelson of Seguin, Texas; mother in-law, Hazel Inman of California, Mo., and multiple nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers Howard Dean Bennette, William Clayton Bennette and father in-law John Inman. Evelyn attended McKittrick Elementary School and was a 1936 graduate of Hermann High School. She worked for the Missouri Division of Employment Security from 1946 until her retirement in 1985. Evelyn was a member of the Tebbetts United Methodist Church; Order of Eastern Star Mokane Chapter 352; Order of Eastern Star Victoria Chapter 14 in Jefferson City; Royal Neighbors of America in Washington, Missouri; and the Princess Rebekah Lodge in Tebbetts. She is survived by one brother, Donald Zeugin of Taos; two sisters: Vanita Boffa of Jefferson City, Iona Viessman of Holts Summit; and numerous nieces and nephews. Evelyn was preceded in death by her longtime cherished companion, Joe Bartley, and dear friend, Carol Bartley. Mrs. Margaret Ann Horn, 79, of Center, passed away Saturday, February 9, at her residence. Mrs. Horn was born in rural Center on April 18, 1933, to Lewis and Opal Rice Palmer. She was married to Jesse Horn who preceded her in death. Mrs. Horn retired from Agriculture Stabilization Conservation Service (ASCS) after 37 years of service. She was a member of the Olivet Christian Church, where she had been treasurer for many years, and was involved in the Christian Women's Fellowship. She had also volunteered with the Hannibal Regional Hospital Auxiliary where she enjoyed working in the gift shop. Survivors include two sons, Tom (Michelle) Horn, of Jefferson City, and Ron Horn of Center; one brother, Ed (Beverley) Palmer, Center; one sister, Mary (George) Lane, Center; six grandchildren, Heather, Rachel, Brennen, Madison, Tannor, and Ellianna; a very special friend, Betty McClintock, Center; many nieces and nephews. She was married on January 11, 1958, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Jefferson City, Mo. to Max Hedglin. A lifelong resident of the Jefferson City area, Diddle attended Jefferson City Public Schools. She was employed with the Tweedie Footwear Factory, McGraw Edison, Chesebrough-Ponds, and most recently in food services with the Jefferson City Public Schools until her retirement in 1991. Diddle was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She enjoyed crocheting, crossword puzzles, sewing, gardening, canning and was an expert homemaker. She obtained the rank of Sergeant before being honorably discharged due to health issues. Sherri worked for Computers Plus until she had to leave due to her health issues. She was employed by Diemler Grocery and CafÈ, P&C Grocery, and Montgomery Ward. She was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, St. Peter Altar Sodality, a 65 year member of the Daughters of Isabella (Glennon Circle), a member of the Sew n' Sews Quilters, Western Catholic Union, Knights of Columbus Helias Council No. 1054 Ladies Auxiliary, and Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree Dan C. Coppin Assembly Ladies Auxiliary. Betty was a stay-at-home mom and was active in both the Boy and Girl Scouts along with her children. Lillian Elizabeth (Bieri) Schoenthal, age 92, of California, passed away Saturday, February 9, 2013, at California Care Center. She was born the youngest child of Ulrich and Sophia (Reuszer) Bieri at their home on the prairie, west of California, on November 5, 1920. Her early years were spent growing up and working on the family farm. She completed the eighth grade at High Prairie School and on April 7, 1947, she married Roy Edward Schoenthal and spent the rest of her life on their farm north of Jamestown. Roy died on April 26, 1990. Lillian is the last of her family to pass, having been preceded in death by her parents and her brothers and sisters, Martin Bieri, Ida Bieri, Frank Bieri (Mary), Ruth Rohrbach (Emmet) Edwin Bieri (Lena), Henry Bieri (Clarice), Frances Karr (Ray), Ralph Bieri (Gertrude), and Esther Bieri. Lillian was a homemaker and working partner with Roy on the farm. She spent her days tending to livestock, helping in the field, gardening and milking her beloved Guernsey cows. She had a special knack in raising and caring for orphan pigs and calves and devoted however much time it took to keep them going. She was a wonderful cook and host. There was always food on her table for anyone who came to visit or just stopped by. No one was a stranger at her house. She particularly enjoyed sharing her rich Guernsey ice cream, Christmas candies and brownies with rich milk, coffee or sweet iced tea. Not having any children, Lillian and Roy helped raise many nephews and nieces also their children and treated and loved them as if they were their own. "Aunt Lillian" was a special person to those adopted nephews and nieces and provided many life-long memories that will not be forgotten. Lillian kept and cared for her mother and several siblings in her home in later years and her house was a favorite gathering place for family members to visit and spend time. As her own health failed in later years, she had several "phone friends" that were helpful in looking out for each other. Lillian and Roy were active members of St. Paul's Evangelical Church in Jamestown. Outside of the time spent at home and on the farm, Lillian helped with church and community activities in Jamestown and was extremely supportive of community projects. Wilfred Bernard "Toby" Toebben, 88, of Jefferson City, died Monday, February 11, 2013, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on July 29, 1924, in Jefferson City, the son of the late August and Laura (Lage) Toebben. He served in the United States Army during World War II in Central Europe and the Aleutian Islands. He was united in marriage on August 11, 1945, in Jefferson City, to Martha Marie Maasen who resides at the home. Toby was the manager for the Jefferson City area school buses from 1964-1986. He was also a driver for Mid-American Coaches from 1986-1994. Toby was co-owner of Walt & Toby Sinclair Service from 1958-1964; worked for Jefferson City Body & Frame from 1955-1958; and Shikles Motor Company from 1947-1955. He was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, Holy Name Society, and American Legion Post 5. He also served as a communion minister at St. Peter Church and St. Mary's Health Center. Toby enjoyed fishing and hunting, tinkering with mechanical work, and especially loved being with his family. Obituary for Merle L. Gieck
Mr. Merle L. Gieck, age 78 years, of Eldon, Mo., a former Jefferson City resident, died Wednesday, February 13, 2013, at St. Mary's Health Center. Merle was born March 1, 1934, in Jefferson City, Mo., the son of Jose L. and Elnathan "Alta" Maples Gieck. He was married on March 3, 1980, to Lucynthia B. Kerr who preceded him in death on June 28, 2012. A life-long resident of the Jefferson City area, Merle attended Jefferson City High School. He was employed as a custodian with Jefferson City Public Schools for 34 years prior to his retirement on December 1, 1994. He attended the East Side Assembly of God in Eldon, Mo. Survivors include: one son, James L. Gieck of Holts Summit, Mo; one daughter, Jill Nichols and her husband Dean of Taos, Mo.; one brother, James Gieck and his wife Dorothy of Jefferson City, Mo.; one step-son, Marvin Gregory and his wife Linda of Eldon, Mo.; several grandchildren, step-grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and two brothers, Louis Gieck Sr. and Amil Gieck. Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 12:00 noon until 1:00 p.m. Friday, February 15, 2013. Robert Lester "Bobbob" Hogge, age 89, of California, died Monday, February 11, 2013, at California Care Center, California. Robert Lester "Bobbob" Hogge was born on June 26, 1923, in Morehead, Ky. His parents were Maude Cooper Hogge and Lester Hogge. Robert had one brother, Elijah M. Hogge, and one sister, Barbara Ann Smith, (both deceased). Bob attended Breckenridge Preparatory School before attending Morehead State University in Kentucky. He then joined the Navy. While in the Navy he attended Central Methodist College in Fayette, where he met Eleanor J. Todd. They were married in Miami, Fla., on June 30, 1945. He served as an ensign in the Navy during World War II and was discharged in 1946. He then returned to Morehead State University and graduated with a bachelor's degree in education to teach history and political science. He moved to California and entered into partnership with Bill Todd in the Todd-Hogge Ford dealership for 41 years. He retired in 1988. Bob was Presiding Commissioner of Moniteau County for 12 years. Bob served with many organizations in California as a member of the board including Moniteau R-1 School, United Methodist Church, California Country Club, Farmers and Traders Bank and Central Trust Bank and served as president of California Progress Inc. Bob and Eleanor have two daughters, Dana Bolin (Don), Jefferson City, and Dale Maude Graff (William), Prairie Home; five grandchildren, Todd Bolin, Jefferson City, Ashley (Erik) Thomas, Jefferson City, Leslie Graff, Memphis, Tenn., Andy Bolin (Amber), California, and Chris (Sarah) Graff, California; and six great-grandchildren: William Todd Bolin, Mikayla Alice Thomas, Drew Christopher Graff, Jalen Thomas Graff, Chatman Logue Pardoe, Brady Lane Bolin. Bob had one daughter, Gail Beth, who died in child birth. Bob's hobbies included golf, fishing, refinishing furniture, gardening and watching all kinds of sports. He was proud of his work adding the elevator at the Moniteau County Courthouse while he was Presiding Commissioner. Bob Hogge was known to be trustworthy, will speak the truth and is a man of integrity and character. He loved Kentucky, Moniteau County and California. He was education and civic-minded and loved his family more than anything. Debra A. Carey, age 53 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., died Tuesday, February 12, 2013. She was born on August 5, 1959, in Jefferson City, Mo., the daughter of Lewis B. and Geraldine E. Schaefer Taylor. She was married on March 17, 1982, in Jefferson City, Mo., to Patrick Jarrett Carey. A lifelong resident of the Jefferson City area, Debbie attended St. Peter School and Helias High School. She was employed with Dek Electro for over 30 years as a photographic printer of driver's licenses and later worked for the License and Verification Bureau for the last several years. Debbie always enjoyed music whether it was listening to her husband play his keyboards, dancing to his band, or keeping beat with her tambourine. In her free time, she spent many hours writing poetry and taking care of her cats. Most importantly, she cherished time with family and friends and always wanted to bring laughter to others. Survivors include: her husband of 30 years, Pat Carey; one daughter, Heather L. Hoerschgen and her husband Scott of Jefferson City, Mo.; two brothers, Gerald W. Taylor and his wife Marsha of Jefferson City, Mo. and Kenneth L. Taylor and his wife Ellen of Holts Summit, Mo.; one sister, Sharon Taylor Cowley and her husband John of Lohman, Mo.; and one granddaughter, Samantha Hoerschgen; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, great-aunts and uncles, and great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Bobby Taylor on July 12, 2006. She was born Janruary 4, 1938, in Hillsboro, Ill., to Richard Emery Martin and Arabella Elizabeth Goodson. On June 15, 1962, Mary was united in marriage in Sacramento, Calif., to Richard Dale Gray. She was a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses until her death. Mr. Kenneth E. Campbell, age 76 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., died Wednesday, February 13, 2013, at St. Mary's Health Center. Kenneth was born on August 9, 1936, in Lansing, Mich., the son of Earl V. and Sue O. Silvernail Campbell. He was married to Margaret L. Curtis. Kenneth was employed as a pipefitter with General Motors in Flint, Michigan for 20 years and enjoyed being a part time farmer. He loved having his four sons help him on the farm. After his employment with General Motors, he moved to Versailles in 1976. While living in central Missouri, he owned Ozark Appliance Center in Gravois Mills, Mo. He spent many hours outdoors hunting and fishing when he was younger. He was extremely proud of raising four boys and all their accomplishments. Survivors include: four sons, Michael Campbell and his wife Carlene of Eugene, Mo., William Earl Campbell of Eugene, Mo., Kenneth Robert Campbell and his wife Donna of Harriman, Tenn., and Richard Campbell and his wife Jane of Cadiz, Ky.; two sisters, Sharon Mervyn of Caro, Mich. and Donna McDaniel of Caro, Mich.; 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, and five step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and three sisters, Joyce Hetherington, Carol Koop, and Kaye Helzer; and one brother, William Campbell.
