Chief Warrant Officer Robert L. Griffin (MOARNG, ret.), age 85 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., died Thursday, February 18, 2016, at his home. Bob was born March 7, 1930 in Jefferson City, Mo., the son of Howard and Anna Karr Griffin. He was married on February 9, 1952 in Jefferson City, Mo., to Mary Rice, who preceded him in death on May 23, 2015. A lifelong resident of the Jefferson City area, Bob was a 1948 graduate of Jefferson City High School and attended the Jefferson City Junior College. Bob was employed as the assistant manager at the State Theatre and later as a soda jerk with Tanner's Drug Store. He joined the Missouri Army National Guard on June 21, 1948 and retired as a Chief Warrant Officer on March 7, 1987. He was a member of the Host Lions Club; American Legion, Roscoe Enloe Post 5; Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Aerie 2693; and NGROT (National Guard Retired Old Timers). Bob enjoyed going on cruises and senior bus trips to Boonville to gamble. Most importantly he loved spending time with his family. Survivors include: one son, Clint Griffin and his wife Kathy of Jefferson City, Mo.; two grandchildren, Aaron Griffin of Dallas, Texas and Paige Griffin of Jefferson City, Mo. Mrs. Bettye Jo Gilbert, age 84 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away Saturday, February 20, 2016, at Villa Marie Nursing Center. Bettye was born on January 24, 1932, in West Monroe, Louisiana, the daughter of William R. and Achsah Thrasher Prince. She was married on December 24, 1951, in Jonesboro, Louisiana to Welton B. "Bo" Gilbert. Bettye graduated from high school in Jonesboro, Louisiana and later attended Louisiana Polytechnic Institute in Ruston, Louisiana. A resident of Jefferson City since 1976, Bettye co-owned Capital City Research Company for years and was proud of the several books they published. She spent many years researching and documenting family genealogy as well as working to help others with their genealogical research. Bettye was a homemaker the majority of her life and always cherished time with her family, especially her grandchildren and their activities. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and also a member of the Optimist Club, the Order of the Eastern Star, and Daughters of the American Revolution. Bettye loved being outdoors in her garden and even received an award for the "garden of the month." In her free time, she was an avid reader, particularly of historical novels and researching genealogy. Bo and Bettye enjoyed their travels and living in various places. Survivors include: three children, Shirley Gilbert Gassen of Cypress, Texas, Michael Gilbert (wife Rose) of Harahan, Louisiana, and Sean "Pat" Gilbert (significant other, Jan Conley) of Jefferson City, Mo.; one daughter-in-law, Theresa Gilbert of Jefferson City, Mo.; one half-sister, Dee Dee Littlepage of Silsbee, Texas; six grandchildren, Dr. Matthew Gassen (wife Megan), Jennifer Woodward (husband Scott), Nicholas Gilbert, Aaron Gilbert (wife Dana), Christopher Gilbert (fiancÈ Keri Moore), and Kellie Gilbert; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Claiborne Gilbert on July 5, 2005; and one half-brother. Joseph M. Ihler Jr., 88, of Jefferson City, passed away Friday, February 19, 2016, at Heisinger Bluffs. He was born July 8, 1927, in Lohman, Missouri, the son of the late Joseph Mathias, Sr. and Esther Clara Kaiser Ihler. He served in Korea with the United States Army, 11th Airborne Division. He was united in marriage on April 17, 1955, in Jefferson City to Francis Ann Kaiser who preceded him in death on March 23, 1995. On November 22, 1997, he married Dorothy Christine Weber in St. Martins who preceded him in death on September 16, 2013. He worked for Sears Company as a service technician and once he retired he was a rural school bus driver. He was a member of St. Martin Catholic Church; and enjoyed restoring vehicles, including a 1926 Harley Davidson and a 1924 Model-T. He had an extensive clock collection and loved playing cards, dominos, bingo and puzzles with family and friends. Survivors include five children, Ronald (Jennifer) Ihler, Kingdom City; Julie (Burkey) Chambers, Taos; Kathy (Mel) McMahan, Kansas City, Mo.; Thomas Ihler, St. Martins; and Jeanine Schollmeyer, Clarksburg; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one sister, Irma Jansen, Jefferson City. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Amber Renee Strope. Bertha Emma Hettenbach Holzem, 92, of Jefferson City, died Friday, February 19, 2016, at Heisinger Bluffs. She was born on the family farm three miles west of Chamois on March 26,1923, the daughter of the late William Charles and Anna Trachsel Hettenbach. After graduating from Chamois High School in 1941, Mrs. Holzem moved to Jefferson City and worked for the State of Missouri, first for the State Board of Health (Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services) and later for the Unemployment Compensation Commission (Missouri Division of Employment Security). In 1946, she moved to St. Louis and worked for a short period of time for the United States Department of War (Department of Defense.) On July 30, 1947, she was united in marriage at Assumption Catholic Church in Morrison, Missouri, to Edward Joseph Holzem who preceded her in death on January 15, 2014. She and her husband always had a substantial garden; she especially enjoyed her beautiful row of zinnias. Immediately following marriage, she and her husband moved to Jefferson City. After the birth of her children, she returned to work in 1961, first working for the Credit Bureau of Jefferson City until 1976; followed by Central Missouri Adjustment Service until full-time retirement in 1988. She was one of the original members of the Cathedral of St. Joseph and attended the first Mass in the Cathedral on Christmas Eve in 1968. She and her husband faithfully participated in Perpetual Adoration at 9:00 a.m. each Wednesday for 21 years. Given a growing number of Catholic families in western Jefferson City, in June 1952, Monsignor Joseph Vogelweid, Pastor of St. Peter Church, encouraged the formation of Fatima Circle, a Pinochle Card Club. In addition to Mrs. Holzem, the original Fatima Circle members were Gerri Stockman, Ruth Wallendorf, Clara Backes, Edna Schepker, Pauline Boeckman, Pat Kremer, Fronie Evers and Corrine Flick. After 40 years of prayers and playing cards, the Fatima Circle met for pinochle for the last time in May 1992. Survivors include four children: Jeffrey Holzem (Shelley Swoyer), Jefferson City; Maxine (Fred) Lueckenotte, Manchester; Denise (Tom) Deuschle, Jefferson City; Diann (Keith) Rosenkrans, Hannibal; seven grandchildren, Amy (Bill) Lueckenotte Goche, Daryl (Nora) Lueckenotte, Loren Holzem, Collin Holzem, Emma Deuschle, Katie (Kyle) Rosenkrans Wessel and Tommy Deuschle; and five great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Frieda Rosena Hettenbach and Lydia Anna Hettenbach Hagedorn; brother, Walter William George Hettenbach; and her twin brother Herman John Hettenbach. Paul Louis Bernskoetter, 83, of Jefferson City, passed away on Friday, February 19, 2016, at his residence. He was born on May 18, 1932, in Taos, Missouri, the son of Linus and Lidwina (Wolken) Bernskoetter, both of whom preceded him in death. He was married on December 26, 1950, at St. Peter Catholic Church in Jefferson City to Betty L. Libbert, who survives at the home. Paul attended school at St. Francis Xavier in Taos. He was employed with Capital City Water Company for 43 years. He served on the Immaculate Conception Parish Council, and attended Cursillo. He was a Chapter President for the local 4H chapter, was a Past President of Jefferson City Host Lions Club, Lions Club District Governor from 1991-1992, and was Past President and Trustee of Jefferson City Eagles Club. He coached Little League baseball for 17 years. He also was a Babe Ruth baseball coach and helped set up the team. He was an umpire for Jefferson City Parks Department, and also coached fast pitch softball. He was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan and had aspirations of managing in the big leagues. Paul loved gardening and caring for his lawn. He enjoyed pheasant and deer hunting and grilling pork steaks. Besides his wife of 65 years, he is survived by: four sons: Daniel Bernskoetter and wife Sally of Lohman; Roger Bernskoetter and wife Barb of Chillicothe; Wayne Bernskoetter and wife Donna of Wardsville; and Mark Bernskoetter and wife Renae of Springfield; 17 grandchildren and 33 great- grandchildren; brothers and sisters: Norbert Bernskoetter of Wardsville; Agnes Brondel of Wardsville; Catherine Martin, Lucille Bernskoetter, and John Bernskoetter, all of Jefferson City. Marsha was born on November 11, 1960, in Jefferson City, a daughter to Carl A. and the late Bertha E. (Rustemeyer) Rhoads. Marsha was a 1979 graduate of Linn High School. On May 30, 2010, Marsha was united in marriage in Belle, to Leroy Edwin Bush, who survives at their home. Marsha was a member of Little Flock Church where she enjoyed helping with the youth and other church actives. She most recently attended the First Christian Church in Belle. Marsha's greatest joy was spending time with her family and friends. She enjoyed going to toy shows with her father, going to ballgames, or trying to find the best buy at area rummage sales. Marsha enjoyed making blankets, crocheting, working on crossword puzzles, reading Stephen King books, watching horror movies, working in her flower and vegetable gardens, camping, and spending time with her cats. Marsha was a great cook. She enjoyed making her homemade pizza, chili, or her marshmallow fluff. In addition to her husband of five years, Marsha is survived by: two stepchildren, Becky Bush of Steelville and Quincy Bush of Belle; two sisters, Carla Sue Reinkemeyer and her husband Gary of Linn and Tamara Rhoads Cigliana of Linn; two brothers, Steve Rhoads and his wife Leanne of Holts Summit and Tom Rhoads and his wife Christa of Linn; two aunts on her mother's side; nieces, nephews, two great-nieces and one great-nephew, along with extended family and friends. Diana L. Echols, 71, of Jefferson City, passed away Saturday, February 20, 2016, at Ellis Fischel in the University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia. She was born December 31, 1944, in Jefferson City, the daughter of the late Thelbert and Lillian (Kiesling) Newton. Diana was a 1962 graduate of Jefferson City High School, and went on to earn her Bachelor's degree in 1966 from the University of Missouri in Columbia. Diana was an Art Teacher at Jefferson City Public Schools, and worked for the Jefferson City School District from 1974 to 2004. She also served as director for the Washington Park Ice Arena skating program for over 25 years, where she directed skating programs at the ice rink, including the annual ice show. She was a very glitzy and glamorous gal, robust and rich in spirit. She was also giving, caring and compassionate. Diana was a pet lover, leader in her organizations, teacher, artist, Mizzou football fan, loved to play cards, loved to travel and drive her RV and was a member and vice president of the Heart of Missouri RV group. She loved to sing in the choir at the First Christian Church. She sang karaoke and just really loved to sing. Diana was very active within the community and was a member of the First Christian Church, where she also served as Elder, and was a member of the Over 55 group at church. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, President of Cultured Pearls, Beta Sigma Phi Beta MU Master Sorority where she joined in 1976, Jefferson City Art Club, River City Red Hat Club, Director of Ice Shows, District Representative of MAEA (Missouri Art Education Association) and a member of the Jefferson City and Columbia Parkinson Groups. Diana is survived by two sons: Brent Anthony Echols of Jefferson City; Shawn Christopher Echols of the State of Texas; the love of her life for the past 22 years: William "Skip" Allen of Jefferson City; two granddaughters: Stevie JuneAnn Echols and Katy Sinclair Echols; along with several step-children and step-grandchildren. Obituary for Theresa Regina Haslag
Theresa Regina Haslag, 82, of Jefferson City, passed away Sunday, February 21, 2016, at SSM Health St. Mary's Hospital. She was born March 27, 1933, in Loose Creek, Mo., the daughter of the late Gustave and Mary Mertens Kremer. She was united in marriage on August 27, 1955, in Loose Creek, Mo., to Hugo Henry Haslag who preceded her in death on October 19, 1998. Theresa worked over 40 years for the State of Missouri Employment Security as a Claims Supervisor. She was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church and was very involved in the daily activities of the church. Survivors include: one son, David (LeAnn) Haslag, Jefferson City; two granddaughters, Alexis Haslag and Molly Haslag, both of Jefferson City; one brother, Sylvester (Evelyn) Kremer, Loose Creek; three sisters and brother-in-law, Agnes Muenks, Jefferson City, Pauline (Hubert) Bescheinen, Loose Creek, Margaret Kremer, Jefferson City; one sister-in-law, Mary Esther Kremer, Loose Creek; and two brothers-in-law, Alvin Toebben, St. Martins, Mitch Massman, Wardsville; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by: her brother, Aloysius Kremer; three sisters and brother-in-law, Clara and Al Backes, Generose Toebben and Betty Massman; and one brother-in-law, Ed Muenks. Visitation will be 4-6:30 p.m., Wednesday, February 24, 2016, at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home with a prayer service at 3:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Thursday, February 25, 2016, at St. Peter Catholic Church with the Rev. Gregory C. Meystrik officiating. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Peter Catholic Church, 216 Broadway St. Jefferson City, MO 65101. Obituary for Heath A. Kempker
Heath A. Kempker, 26, of Eugene, Missouri, passed away Saturday, February 20, 2016, in Eugene, Missouri. He was born October 14, 1989, in Jefferson City, Missouri, the son of Russell and Debra (Bax) Kempker who survive of Eugene, Missouri. Heath was a member of Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Mary's Home, Mo. and the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the Cove Dwellers Bow Fishing Club. He enjoyed bow fishing, fishing for crappie, hunting, bowling and golf. He was a dedicated fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and the Tennessee Titans. Other survivors include: brothers, Shawn Kempker and Chad Kempker of Eugene, Mo.; grandmothers, Rose Marie Kempker of Eugene, Mo., Jane Bax of St. Elizabeth, Mo. He is preceded in death by his two grandfathers, Clem Kempker and Arlie Bax. Visitation will be Tuesday, February 23, 2016 from 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Mary's Home, Mo. Funeral Mass will be Wednesday, February 24, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church with Rev. Patrick J. Shortt officiating. Interment will follow at Our Lady of the Snows Cemetery. Memorials in his name are suggested to Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church.
