Obituary for Lewis Wagner Forbis
Lewis (Les) Wagner Forbis, age 96 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away Wednesday, June 24, 2015, at Westbrook Terrace. Lewis was born to Connie Ethnie and Mary Harris (Martin) Forbis on August 12, 1918, in Ashland, Missouri. His family moved from Ashland to Jefferson City, Missouri in 1928, and then to Osage City, Missouri in 1930. Lewis was a 1938 graduate of Jefferson City High School. On November 7, 1943 he married Thelma Rose Thompson, who preceded him in death on August 7, 1995 after 51 years of marriage. On May 7, 1943, Lewis was drafted in the United States Army Air Corps (the U.S. Air Force). He reported to the Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis for basic training before being transferred to Denver where he taught at the Gunnery Training School. While there, Lewis met and trained two Hollywood stars, Jimmy Stewart and Clark Gable. Lewis remembered them as "really nice guys and good students." Lewis was later stationed in New York, N.Y., Salt Lake City, Utah, Murrock Dry Lake, Calif., Tucson, Ariz. and Grand Island, Neb., where his wife, Thelma, was able to join him. Lewis was then sent to the Pacific Theatre to the Island of Guam where he worked in the grounds crew making sure the air planes were ready for action, especially when it was his turn to fly on bombing missions. Lewis was honorably discharged from the service on December 23, 1945 ("at high noon" he said). After his return home, Lewis worked for Southside Super Market on Dunklin Street. In 1947, he bought Moreau Heights Grocery store located at Clark Avenue and E. Atchison St. He had fond memories of serving the many families and schools located in the area. In 1956, he sold the store and went to work, for the rest of his career, as an auto mechanic working with several gas station owners of his time: Harry Kallenbach, Urban Strope, Oscar Ortmeyer, Clete Dubbert and Paul Hoffman. Lewis retired in 1983 but continued to work part-time until 1984. After he retired, and until her death in 1995, Lewis took care of his wife Thelma who had taken ill. Lewis was raised in the Baptist faith, later joining St. John's Lutheran Church at Schubert, Mo. In his years with St. John's he served as President, Vice-President, Trustee, Financial Secretary and Counselor-at-Large. You could rarely talk to Lewis without first talking about his family in Christ at St. John's. Lewis will be remembered for his stories of the "old days" while living in Jefferson City and Osage City, as a wonderful father, father-in-law, step-grandfather and step-great grandfather. He will be dearly missed by his surviving son, Allan Forbis (wife, Carol); daughter-in law, Mary Beth Dobbs-Forbis; his step-grandson, Ryan Hlavacek; step-granddaughter, Sara Hlavacek; step-great-grandchildren, Zachariah Hargrove and Alexandria Hlavacek; nephews, James (wife, Kay) Forbis and David (wife, Laurie) Thompson; great-nephews and great-great- nieces and nephews, and many friends. Besides his wife Thelma, Lewis was also preceded in death by his son, Bryan L. Forbis; brother and sister-in-law, Howard and Esther Forbis; Howard's twin brother, who died at birth; nephew, Rick Thompson; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Howard and Dorothy Thompson; and brother-in-law, James Thompson.
