Obituary for Richard M. "Smiley" Smallwood

Mr. Richard M. "Smiley" Smallwood, age 87 years, of Hartsburg, Mo., passed away Monday, December 1, 2014, at home surrounded by his family. Richard was born on August 4, 1927, in Cedar City, Mo., a son of James E. and Florence Crane Smallwood. He was married on September 10, 1950, in Cedar City, Mo., to Betty Lou Gaither. Richard served in the United States Navy during World War II being honorably discharged in October 1949. A lifelong resident of Hartsburg, Richard was a book binder for 44 years at Von Hoffmann Press until his retirement in 1991. During his retirement he worked at Eagle Knoll Golf Course in Hartsburg for 14 years because he always enjoyed being on the golf course. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Roy Sone Post 1003 and Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Aerie 2693. Most importantly, he cherished time with his large family, especially camping on the river and riding his four-wheeler with his boys. Richard was an avid fisherman and enjoyed playing the bass guitar, bowling and reading. He also looked forward to watching any St. Louis Cardinals, Missouri Tigers, and Kansas City Chiefs games. Survivors include: his wife of 64 years, Betty Smallwood; two sons, Donald Smallwood (wife Betty Pohl) of Jefferson City, Mo. and Stanley Smallwood (wife Julie) of Hartsburg, Mo.; five daughters, Donna Turpin (husband Gary) of Hartsburg, Mo., Vicky Dorman (husband Charles) of Hartsburg, Mo., Dora Guffey (husband Joe) of Ashland, Mo., Sandra Carlos (husband Rodney) of Ashland, Mo., and Cindy Sessler (husband Tony) of Ashland, Mo.; one sister, Imogene Boeger (husband Ross) of Jefferson City, Mo.; 22 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Michael Smallwood in July 2010. Visitation will be held at Peace United Church of Christ in Hartsburg, Mo. from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon, Wednesday, December 3, 2014. A memorial service will be conducted at 12:00 noon, Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at Peace United Church of Christ with the Reverend Clainel Nervek officiating. Graveside services and interment will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Bonds Chapel Cemetery in Hartsburg, Mo. Margaret Jane Hoey, 86, of Jefferson City, died Saturday, November 29, 2014, at Adams Street Place. She was born October 13, 1928, in Mulberry, Kan., the daughter of the late John Dennis and Agnes Mary (King) Ryder. She was a 1946 graduate of Clinton High School and attended St. Mary College. She was united in marriage on August 21, 1948, in Clinton, Mo., to Jack Woltzen Hoey, who survives at the home. Jane worked for over 16 years for the Thomas Jefferson Regional Library as an assistant librarian. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Ann's Sodality, Western Catholic Union, and AARP. Jane loved history and enjoyed politics. Other survivors include: three children, Jay "Mike" (Mary Beth) Hoey, Jefferson City, Ann (Barry) Backer, Lohman and John (Nancy) Hoey, Jefferson City; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Visitation will be 11 a.m. till 12 noon, Wednesday, at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home. Funeral service will be 12 noon, Wednesday, December 3, 2014, at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home with the Rev. Msgr. Betty Gayle McCubbin, 89, of Eldon, passed away Friday, November 28, 2014. She was born on November 13, 1925, the daughter of Julius and Anna Gensert. She was united in marriage in 1963, to Carrol J. McCubbin, who preceded her in death in April 2013. She enjoyed owning and operating various places over the years including: Stanley Home Products, Longhorn CafÈ, Lake Ozark Wax Museum, The Cinnamon Shoppe, Public Beach #2, among others. Betty enjoyed her friends and coworkers, but most importantly loving and supporting her family. Betty is survived by her children: John G. (Sharon) Atteberry of Jefferson City, Paula Wilson of Eldon, Thomas "Winn" Rouch of Eldon; five step-children: Brenda (Fred) Schaffer of Iberia, Becky Thomas of Lake Ozark, Greg (Linda) McCubbin of Denver, Colorado, Twyla (William) Service of Shawnee, Kansas and Beth (Bob) Coppage of Greensboro, North Carolina; three grandchildren: Jerome (Terry) Atteberry of Eldon, Jerrod (Ashley) Atteberry of Jefferson City and Misha Gensert of Eldon; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild, 11 step-grandchildren and 19 step-great grandchildren. She was a graduate of Helias High School and worked with her family at Veit's Restaurant and then after the closing, she worked for Von Hoffman. She enjoyed traveling, spending time on the beach, but most of all she loved to spend time with her son, Dylan. Michelle is survived by her special friend, Billy Todd of the home; one son: Dylan Todd of the home; one daughter: Paige Jarden; three brothers: Shawn Veit; Mike Veit; Shannon Veit; one sister: Dawn Renee Veit; one grandson: Tommy Todd. Clellie James "Jim" Cundiff, 59, of Jefferson City, passed away Monday, December 1, 2014, at Capital Region Medical Center. He was born June 6, 1955, the son of the late Clellie James and Beulah Pearl (Gilpin) Cundiff Sr. Jim attended Jefferson City Public Schools. He was employed with McDonalds in Holts Summit for over 18 years. Jim enjoyed fishing, playing the lottery, yard work and talking. He especially loved his family and spending time with them. He leaves to cherish his memory four sisters: Dorothy Fox (James), Linda Hale, and Edna Barrett, all of Jefferson City, and Betty Ousley (William) of Holts Summit; two brothers: Larry Gilpin (Glenda) of Hayward, Calif. and Curtis Cundiff (Bridget) of Holts Summit; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and friends and family. Jim was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Robert Lee Cundiff. Deborah was born November 29, 1951, in Decatur, Ill., the daughter of Harold and Joan McKay Smith. She was married on July 5, 1968, in Decatur, Ill., to Franklin M. Whitten, who preceded her in death on August 5, 2000. A homemaker, Deborah had been a resident of the Jefferson City area for the past year. Survivors include: three daughters, Joan Marshall of Tyler, Texas, Susie Humphries and her husband Chad of Tyler, Texas, and Shanta McNew and her husband Harvey of Jefferson City, Mo.; two sons, Joshua Whitten and his wife Tiffany of Columbia, Mo. and Elijah Whitten of Tyler, Texas; her father, Harold Smith of Blue Mound, Ill.; one brother, Butch Smith and his wife Betty of Blue Mound, Ill.; 14 grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren. Mr. Lester D. Cole, age 83 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away Wednesday, December 3, 2014, at SSM Health St. Mary's Hospital surrounded by his loving family, after a brief and courageous battle with Amyloidosis. Lester was born February 1, 1931, in Preston, Mo., the son of James and Hazel Fisher Cole. He was united in marriage on December 19, 1954, in Texas County, Mo. to Glenna Coble. After high school, Lester served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Seoul, South Korea. He was awarded the Korean War Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars. After serving his country, Lester was employed with International Shoe Company in Houston, Mo. In 1963, Lester relocated his family to Jefferson City where he maintained employment with International Shoe Company. In 1966, he began working for the Missouri Department of Corrections as a corrections officer and would later manage the clothing industries program until his retirement in 1996. Lester also was employed in part-time positions with Schulte's IGA and Gerbes Supermarket throughout his career. He and Glenna attended Harvest Time Ministries in Holts Summit, Mo. Lester enjoyed the outdoors, watching wildlife in his backyard, hunting, fishing (especially crappie fishing) and was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan. Survivors include: his wife of almost 60 years, Glenna Cole; one daughter, Rhonda Sickels (husband DeWayne) of Jefferson City, Mo.; one son, Randy Cole (fiancÈe Julie) of Jefferson City, Mo.; two grandchildren, Katelyn Sickels (boyfriend John) and Jared Cole (fiancÈe Kayla); two great-granddaughters, Riley and Bailey Cole; two step-grandchildren, Maitlyn and Marissa Nienhueser; four brothers, Vernon Cole (wife Amy Rose) of Houston, Mo., Glen Cole (wife Agnus) of Springfield, Mo., Wilfred Cole (wife Iretta) of Houston, Mo., and LeRoy Cole (wife Ethel) of Houston, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Fern Marie Overy. Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 6, 2014. John Frank O'Bannon Jr., 88, of Fulton, passed away on Friday, December 5, 2014 at Landmark Hospital in Columbia. He was born on September 17, 1926, in St. Louis Mo., the oldest child of John Frank and Cytha Marie O'Bannon. John grew up in Brown Station, Mo., graduating from the University of Missouri High School in Columbia in 1944. Upon graduation, he immediately enlisted in the Navy. While in the Navy he received the rank of Electrician's Mate 2nd Class. After World War II he returned home to Columbia. In 1947 he joined the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers as a union electrician. John married Wanda Rae Bullock on June 28, 1954. His work took them all over the country. He settled in Fulton, in 1978 to work on the construction of the Callaway Nuclear Plant. He was a member of the IBEW for more than 65 years and taught apprenticeship classes for Local 257 in Jefferson City for more than 30 years. He retired from teaching in 2012. John is survived by his wife of 60 years, Wanda O'Bannon of Fulton; daughter, Lori O'Bannon Harmon; son-in-law, David Harmon; and three grandchildren, Aaron, Logan and Lauren Harmon, all of St. Charles. He is also survived by one sister, Iris D. Rumbaugh of Hallsville; two brothers, Donald G. and Larry D. O'Bannon, both of Columbia; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Robert L. O'Bannon. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at Maupin Funeral Home with Pastor Bruce Williamson officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 9, 2014 and on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Adelaide Lolli Decker, age 101, of Jefferson City, Missouri, passed away Sunday, December 7, 2014, at Oak Tree Villa, in Jefferson City. She was born December 29, 1912, in Keota, Macon County, Missouri to John and Edith (Muzzarilli) Lolli who preceded her in death. She was united in marriage on March 23, 1940, to E. William (Bill) Decker who preceded her in death September 24, 1998. She was employed by the Missouri Conservation Commission for 10 years. For a number of years, she was a secretary in the Senate Secretary's office. In 1978, she retired from the Senate Information Office. She use to say that she had walked every inch of the Capital building and talked to Thomas Hart Benton while he was sketching and painting the murals on the Capital walls. She was honored on her 99th birthday with a presentation of "Resolution" from the Senate presented in the Senate Chamber. Mrs. Decker was a member of St Peter's Catholic Church. She was active in the Girls and Boys Scout Program, also in the Home and School Association and the St. Peter's Altar Sodality. Mrs. Decker was President of the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women working with Bishop Marling. Following retirement, Adelaide, for 11 years, donated her time to the St Joseph Home for the Aged. She was a member of the Cole County Historical Society, Westphalia Historical Society, St. Mary's Health Center Auxiliary and Meadow Lake Acres County Club. She was a founding member of Meadow Lake Acres Country Club. Golf was her passion having so many wonderful memories and friends. She played golf into her 90's! Adelaide is survived by her daughter, Lolli Davis and husband Tom of Olathe, Kansas, son John William Decker and wife Jean of Taos, Missouri; five grandchildren Michael Davis (Jenny), Scott Davis (Michelle), Tom Decker, Jennifer Decker, Caitlin Hamilton (Derrick); five great-grandchildren Tyler Davis, Logan Davis, Camron Davis, Caleb Decker and Aiden Wilson. She was preceded in death by a brother, John Lolli; one sister, Mary Lolli Taylor and husband James B Taylor and one grandson, Christopher John Decker. The family would like to say thank you for the loving care given to Adelaide by the staff of Oak Tree Villa, SSM Hospice nurses and Dr. Don Miller and the many friends that kept a close watch over her. Friends will be received from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, December 11, 2014, at the Houser-Millard Funeral Chapel. A Prayer Service will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. with the Reverend David Maher, officiating. Burial will be private for the family. Twila Thomas, 66 of California, Mo., formerly of Jefferson City, passed away Friday, December 5, 2014, at the Moniteau Care Center in California, Mo. On April 14, 1948, she was born in California, Mo., the daughter of Aubrey E. and Margaret Irene Allee Hall, both of whom proceeded her in death. Twila graduated from Tipton High School. Before moving to California to be near her brothers and sister, she lived in Jefferson City for many years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Jefferson City. She enjoyed visiting with her dear friend and neighbor, Lois Jenkins. She enjoyed watching TV, especially Joel Olsteen on TBN and the Family Feud and going to birthday parties for her Jefferson City friends. She enjoyed her friendship with Charlene Witt of Jefferson City and discussing the Bible with Lois "Dee-Dee" Milligan and her Sissy. Twila was an exceptionally neat and organized person. Twila was a soft spoken, kindhearted and loving person who did not want her sister "Sissy" to be worried about anything. Twila and Grace (Sissy) were very close and were always there for each other. She will be sadly missed by Sissy who LOVED, LOVED her very much. Along with her parents, Twila was preceded in death by an infant brother, an infant sister and a nephew, Brad Hall. Twila is survived by one daughter, Dana Ginnery of Jefferson City; three brothers, Gail Hall of Tipton, Larry Hall of Latham and Morris Hall of California; a sister, Grace Wood of Clarksburg; nieces and nephews, Danny Wood, Tim Wood, both of Clarksburg, Shelly Lloyd of Kansas City, Mo., Larry Ray Hall of Latham and Tina Hall of Tipton. Leland "Lee" E. Springer, age 83, of Jefferson City, passed away Sunday, December 7, 2014, at Capital Region Medical Center in Jefferson City. Lee was born July 19, 1931, in Columbia, a son to the late Dale and Gertrude (Grindal) Springer. Lee received his BS from Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville. On July 31, 1952, he was united in marriage to Pauline Johndro at the Air Force Base Chapel in Presque Isle, Maine. She preceded him in death on September 13, 2012. Lee served his country in the United States Air Force. Lee was a business forms salesman for UARCO Corporation in central Missouri for a number of years. Lee was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Jefferson City where he served as a Deacon and Elder. He was a member of the America Legion, United Sportsman's Club and the Jefferson City Lions Club. He was a fan of Mizzou Sports and hunting quail and pheasants over Brittney Spaniels that he raised. Lee is survived by: two daughters, Sandra Plassmeyer and her husband Larry of Fairfax, Va., and Rose Lee Nill and her husband George "Skip" of O'Fallon, Mo.; a son-in-law, Randy Sparks and his wife Jana of Sedalia; one brother, Philip Springer and his wife Dee of College Station, Texas; one sister, Betty Jean Hill of the State of Iowa; 10 grandchildren and five great- grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife of 60 years, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Karen Sparks. Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 12, 2014, at First Presbyterian Church in Jefferson City. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Dr. Rob Erickson and Rev. David Henry officiating. Interment will be in the Riverview Cemetery in Jefferson City. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the First Presbyterian Church. Rosalee Catherine Buschmann, 77, of Vienna, departed this life on Monday, December 8, 2014, in the Maries Manor Health and Rehab Center, Vienna, after suffering a stroke on Saturday, November 22, 2014. She was born on February 17, 1937, at St. Anthony, in Miller County, a daughter of George and Josephine (Schaffer) Blomberg. Mrs. Buschmann was united in marriage on June 11, 1955, at St. Anthony, to Leonard Henry Buschmann, and to this union, six sons were born. She was a member of the Visitation Catholic Church, Vienna, and was always a willing worker in the church regardless of what needed to be done. During her working life, Mrs. Buschmann had been a waitress at the Owen's CafÈ, Jim's Place, The Bull Pen, and Sally's CafÈ and had worked in the Deli Department at the G & W Supermarket, all in Vienna. Activities she especially enjoyed included flower gardening, gardening in general, yard work, lawn care, cooking, and crocheting. Mrs. Buschmann was a devoted housewife, a loving homemaker, and a person diligent in providing for the needs of her family. Those left to mourn the passing of Mrs. Buschmann include: her husband of 59 years, Leonard Buschmann , of the home near Vienna; four sons, Tim Buschmann (Lillian), Albuquerque, N.M., Rick Buschmann, Vienna, Gary Buschmann (Shelby), Garland, Texas and Neal Buschmann (Cheryl), Vienna; one sister, Dorothy Hartnagel, Las Vegas, Nev.; seven grandchildren, Angie Martin (Joe), St. James, Jeremy Buschmann (Kelli), Aviston, Ill., Renee Overstreet (Keith), Columbia, Alexander Buschmann, San Marcos, Texas, Marisa Buschmann, Garland, Texas, Emily Buschmann (C.J. Fleetwood), Poplar Bluff and Louis Buschmann, Vienna; four great-grandchildren, Tyler Glidden, Bailey Glidden, Cole Buschmann and Jack Buschmann; and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by: two sons, Scott Anthony Buschmann, on September 18, 1964 and Donald Wayne Buschmann, on June 26, 1987; one granddaughter, Dakota Leigh Buschmann, on June 16, 1994; her father, George, on November 9, 1977; her mother, Josephine, on October 17, 1987; one brother, Henry Blomberg, on December 9, 1995; three sisters, Marcella Blomberg at the age of ten years in 1932, infant girl Blomberg in August of 1935 and Bertha Blomberg Bax on January 11, 2000. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m., Wednesday, December 10, 2014, with a Vigil service at 7:30 p.m. and 9 - 10 a.m., on Thursday, December 11, 2014, all in the Visitation Catholic Church, Vienna. The Mass of Christian Burial for Mrs. Buschmann will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Thursday, December 11, 2014, in the Visitation Catholic Church, Vienna, with the Rev. Matthew Flatley as the celebrant. Interment will be in the Visitation Cemetery, Vienna, under the direction of the Vienna Chapel of the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Homes. Ronald "Ronnie" E. Carroll, 52, of Jefferson City, passed away, Friday, December 5, 2014, at Capital Region Medical Center. He was born August 22, 1962, in St. Louis, Missouri, a son of Ronald F. and MaryAnn (Kuehl) Carroll. He attended Jefferson City High School. Ron was currently employed in the produce department at Wal-Mart in Jefferson City and had previously worked at Look Out Mountain Golf Course in Chattanooga, Tennessee. His love of cooking was evident in the jobs he held in many of this area's nursing homes. Ron also enjoyed his work with the Gator Wagon during the summer festival seasons. He was an active member of the American Poolplayers Association as well as the North American Poolshooters Association. He spent many evenings standing over a barbeque for his family. Camping, fishing and playing pool were just some of the things he loved. He enjoyed attending all the sporting and cheerleading events of his step-children. Ron was a Christian who never met a stranger and will be missed by many who enjoyed his company as well as his corny jokes. Ron is survived by his longtime special friend: Nancy Hanks and her children: Tyler and Shelby Bethards of Jefferson City; his father: Ronald F. Carroll (fiancÈe Barbara Bruemmer) of Jefferson City; one brother: Mike Carroll (wife Doris) of Jefferson City, Mo.; one sister: Colleen Kraus (husband John) of Jefferson City, Mo.; and nieces and nephew: Megan Kraus, Kayla Carroll, Clay Carroll, Britni Kraus. He was preceded in death by his mother: MaryAnn Carroll on January 18, 2011.
